El presente volumen contiene dos obras de Arrabal vinculadas con Miguel de Cervantes. Por un lado, su pieza teatral Pingüinas, estrenada en Madrid, en Las Naves del Español-Matadero, sala Fernando Arrabal, el 29 de abril de 2015, bajo la dirección de Juan Carlos Pérez de la Fuente. Y, a continuación, el ensayo y biografía sobre Cervantes, entre otras cosas, titulado: Un esclavo llamado Cervantes. Una conversación entre Cervantes y Arrabal.
Prólogo al ocupado lector, de Fernando Arrabal
¡Qué suerte la mía! Juicios y prejuicios ya no imponen principios ni preceptos al calor de los quemaderos. También aparece hoy Cervantes como figura «ejemplar» y «heroica» para la mayoría de los cervantistas. Pero estos ya no se dejan achicar por el cuadradillo de la intransigencia.
Ruth Reichelberg, catedrática de la Universidad de Bar-Han (Tel Aviv), estudia sus orígenes en su Don Quijote o la novela de un judío enmascarado. El catedrático de la Universidad de Lyon, Louis Combet, examina la homosexualidad y el masoquismo en su Cervantes o las incertidumbre del deseo. La catedrática romana Rosa Rossi analiza su personalidad y sus raíces en Escuchar a Cervantes. ¡Y tantos otros! Sarah Leibovici, Dominique Aubier, Marthe Robert, Víctor Malka, Leandro Rodríguez, etc. Quedan, felizmente, cada vez menos universitarios decididos a entapujar ascendencias y querencias de Cervantes.
Dictó un caprichoso destino ¡cuasi prodigioso! que el 8 de diciembre de 1988 clausurara yo (¡pobre de mí!) el primer Congreso Internacional de cervantistas. ¡Y en Alcalá de Henares! Endomingado por tan inmerecido honor expuse mi visión apasionada y humilde de Cervantes. Y cuando más expuesto me creía, puestos en pie, generosamente, me aplaudieron aquellos brillantes eruditos: desde Jean Canavaggio a Martín de Riquer, a quienes tanto he leído y con quienes, si me lo permiten, «tanto he querido».
No trato de convencer y menos de vencer a nadie. No hay misterio en la vida de Miguel como tampoco en el deslumbramiento que me inspira. Iluminado por mi maestro he pasado ¡tantos ratos de mi vida! Incluso en un oscuro calabozo matritense… antes de escribir, en alas de modestia, este ejercicio de admiración. ¡Vale!
